Cold Weather, Steal My Car

Friendly reminder - a cold car is better that a stolen car.  Police in the area are reminding motorists not to leave their vehicles unattended with the engines running.   Leaving an idling vehicle, even for just a minute, makes it too easy for would be thieves.  In Philadelphia, 19 idling cars were stolen within a 5 day period.

And as a side note - leaving an unattended vehicle idling on the street is illegal in Pennsylvania.

  2. That's very true. Most police cars have what's called an ignition interlock, that doesn't allow the car to be driven. See the guest bloggers post from a few days ago. That being said, I've seen news reports of cop cars being stolen.

  3. It's okay for cops to break the law. Where have you been?

So tell me how this works in your city?

    (a) I leave my car idling to warm up (oh my God the humanity!!)
    (b) Some loser steals it.
    (c) I call the cops.

Since it's illegal, do I get arrested for reporting the crime? Or how does that work? Nothing's more effective at reducing police work than arresting people who report crimes. I can't wait to hear how this works!

Maybe we can make reporting rape a crime, too? You were raped... wearing a short skirt? Flirting? "Leading him on?" Sorry rape victim, you need to be arrested.

  4. Yes Jason. That's what we do. We arrest victims. It makes the paperwork easier. Give me a break.

It's funny though, less that an hour ago, a at left idling was stolen right here in beautiful West Chester. If only that victim had been a follower of The Fuzz Buzz!

  5. Really Jason cut them a break. I'm wondering where you work do you turn the heat and AC off each time you leave your office, wearhouse, building, etc?

Oh and easily found on the internet:
    § 3701. Unattended motor vehicle.
    (a) GENERAL RULE.-No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit the vehicle to stand unattended without placing the gear shift lever in a position which under the circumstances impedes the movement of the vehicle, stopping the engine, locking the ignition in vehicles so equipped, removing the key from the ignition and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway and effectively setting the brake.
    (b) PENALTY.-Any person violating this section is guilty of a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $ 5.

In the "over ride" system the police use they remove the keys and lock the doors. The police car can not be moved and it is secure.
